Join us for UHCA’s annual community potluck dessert event on Thurs, Dec 1 at 6:45 pm in the Alice Birney Elementary School auditorium. We’ll be honoring those who received Plumes in 2016, as well as the families of our Pets of the Month. You’ll also have a chance to meet our new District 3 Councilmember Chris Ward.

Don’t forget to bring new socks for our collection to help veterans and gift cards for Alice Birney School families in need.

The Giving Tree, which was created to help children and families of our local Alice Birney Elementary School who find themselves in need during the holiday season. The Giving Tree is filled with ornaments priced from $5 to $25 from stores, such as Target, Toys R Us, Ralphs, and Trader Joe’s, that allow a family to buy gifts or necessities for the holidays.

It is not too late to contribute to The Giving Tree and the Sock Drive, so don’t come empty-handed!

Help Keep Flags Flying Along Park Blvd

For the past two years, the Lions Club has set out American Flags along the business district of Park Boulevard on eight national holidays most closely associated with American history—Presidents’ Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot’s Day and Veterans’ Day.

Two years ago, UHCA did a small fundraising campaign to cover the expenses of the program. That money has now been spent, so we’re starting another fundraising effort. There are 33 flags put out on each holiday, set up before 7 am the morning of the holiday and taken down around 5 pm. The Lions Club charges $50 per flag to cover the entire year of eight holidays, a bargain by any measure. That adds up to $1650 for the year.

University Heights does not have a business association like Hillcrest or Adams Avenue that can organize and pay for a program like this, so UHCA has stepped in. We’re separately going to individual businesses along Park Boulevard asking them to contribute a small amount, and we’re also asking individual residents to contribute if possible.

If you’d like to help UH keep the flags flying, please make a check out to The Hillcrest Mission Valley Lions Club and mail your checks to UHCA, P.O. Box 33032, San Diego, CA 92163. Or you can bring your check to the next UH Community Association meeting.

The Lions Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and your contribution is tax-deductible. All proceeds from the Flag Program go to The Hillcrest Mission Valley Lions Club in support of services for the blind, the visually impaired and other community programs, which the organization has provided to our community since 1933.
