  • 7:00 REGULAR MEETING
  • VALENTINES TREATS, UHCA MERCHANDISE AND RAFFLE

FEBRUARY PROGRAM

University Heights lit up for the holidays, making this year’s Lights in the Heights one of the best ever. This year we selected one winner from each of the six zones in the Heights, as well as the Best Business, Best Block, and Best Decorated House with all White Lights. Award certificates honoring this year’s winners will be presented at the February meeting.

Our program will also feature Branden G. Butler, senior attorney for the Fair Housing Center of the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. Branden will speak on current housing ‘hot’ topics, including that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s guidance that refusing to rent to persons with a criminal record is discriminatory and illegal. He will discuss potential changes to current state and local policies and regulations that are intended to increase housing availability, including the relaxed restrictions for infill development such as granny flats and other additions to property. We hope to see you.

We’re pleased to honor the men and women of University Heights who have bravely served our country. The celebration will include the singing of our national anthem, recognition of active and retired service members, and information about veterans services and the critical role San Diego has played in the military.

Give the Gift of Vision
UHCA will also be collecting eyeglasses for The Lions Optometric Vision Clinic, a non-profit organization with the primary goal to provide glasses to low- and no-income residents of San Diego County.

Spread Holiday Cheer
In addition, donations will be collected for the Birney Elementary School Giving Tree, an annual program to help families and children of Birney school during Christmas. Just select an ornament with a gift card wish ranging from $5-$25, then bring your gift cards to the December UHCA meeting.

So bring your old eyeglasses, grab an ornament, and join us in honoring our military this Thursday. We’ll see you there!

We will have another opportunity for exploration of our great canyon on June 16. The group will inspect the erosion control dams we installed and make any necessary repairs. We will also be clearing the pathway.

Will more birds be out? Will we run across any scurrying four-footed creatures? Will any flowers still be blooming? Will the pretty, but nonnative, nasturtiums weave their web across the canyon again this year? Join us to find out.

Bring drinking water and wear closed toe shoes. Boots are best. Be prepared for lots of sun and warm weather, we suggest sunscreen, bug repellant, hat and long sleeves. Meet at 9:00 am on the Johnson Avenue side of the canyon, between Lincoln and Hayes Avenues. Be sure to check out how the walkway across the canyon top on Johnson is changing. It really has progressed nicely. See you soon!
