Community gardens are all about creating and strengthening communities. Did you know that we have a community garden in University Heights? About a year ago, we were graciously offered the use of a small plot of land by a local resident on her private property. We swiftly pulled together a team of local residents and got to work sifting, tilling, planting, and most importantly, eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables!
It has been a great year of learning and community building. In today’s fast-paced world of communicating through e-mail and texts, we all agree it’s been a great opportunity to get our hands off our phones and computers and in the dirt, learn a new skill, meet new friends, and support healthy lifestyles.
We are thrilled to announce that our sponsor has been so pleased with the arrangement, she has now offered to allow us to use more of her land. So we are in the process of clearing the area and building individual plots. Because of the extra space, we have been able to purchase a compost bin for the area. We were able to get the bin at a discount by completing the on-line application on the City of San Diego Compost Bin Voucher Program Application webpage.
We try to keep our FB page, University Heights Community Garden Project, updated. But to learn more, or if you know of any public areas, or if you are interested in donating the use of privately owned space for our garden, please e-mail Jill Roughan at firstname.lastname@example.org.
